McHenry County is located in Northeast Illinois, and contains suburbs of Chicago.  The county is named for Major William McHenry, a major in the Blackhawk War of 1832.  
The seat is Woodstock, while the largest city is Crystal Lake.  The Fox River is a feature of the area.  
Main roads in the county include I-90, US-12, US-14, US-20, IL-23, IL-31, and IL-47.
It is bordered by Lake, Cook, DeKalb, Kane and Boone Counties in Illinois; as well as Walworth and Kenosha Counties in Wisconsin.
